At the behest of Lord Shiva, the Saptarishis went to test Goddess Parvati. They asked Parvati, "Devi! For whom are you performing this rigorous penance?" Parvati replied, "Rishis! The purpose of my penance is to obtain Sadashiva as my husband." The sages said, "Look! Narada has corrupted your wisdom. You are performing penance for a husband who is indifferent, inauspicious, devoid of virtues, and wears a garland of snakes. We have selected a suitable groom for you. He is extremely handsome, endowed with all virtues, and the Lord of Vaikuntha." Parvati said, "Rishis! My body was born from the mountain. Therefore, even if I lose my body, my stubbornness cannot be broken. Not only in this life, but for millions of lives to come, I have this stubbornness: I will either marry Lord Shiva or remain a virgin." The sages saluted Goddess Parvati as Jagadamba and told all the news to Maheshwar Shiva, Mahadev became very happy after hearing this. Thereafter Shivaji became samadhi.
At that time, a fierce demon named Taraka emerged. With his immense strength and tremendous brilliance, he conquered all the worlds and their protectors. Defeated, the gods began wandering from place to place. Tarakasura had received a boon that he would be killed only by a son born from Lord Shiva's semen. The gods approached Brahma with their problem and expressed their grief. Brahma said, "You must somehow send Kamadeva to Lord Shiva, who will arouse his mind and disturb him from his meditation. Sati, who had died during Daksha's sacrifice, has now been reborn as Parvati. She has performed severe penance to make Shiva her husband. When Shiva's meditation is broken, we will request him for marriage. This may be beneficial to the gods, but there is no other solution."
Following Brahma's advice, the gods prayed to Kamadeva and narrated their plight. Kamadeva said, "I know very well that my welfare lies in opposing Shiva. Yet, for the welfare of the people, I will certainly do this." Saying this, Kamadeva took his flower bow and arrow and went near Lord Shiva. With his power, he controlled the entire earth. All the men and women in the world, abandoning their dignity, came under the influence of Kama. The desire for lust was awakened in everyone's heart. The entire world was in turmoil. Even yogis and ascetics fell under the control of Kama, so what about ordinary people? Women began to see the entire world as male, and men as female. No one had patience left in their hearts.
Having thus subdued the entire world, Kamadeva approached Lord Shiva. He sat on a beautiful branch of a mango tree. He released five arrows from his flower bow, which struck Shiva's heart. When Shiva opened his eyes and saw Kamadeva, he became very angry. Then he opened his third eye and burnt Kamadeva to ashes with its intense radiance. Seeing her husband's plight, Kamadeva's wife Rati pleaded with Shiva in many ways. Pleased, Lord Bholanath transformed Kamadeva into Anang and later granted Rat the boon of his being born as Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna.
Rati was overjoyed with Lord Shiva's assurance. She bowed repeatedly at his feet, praising him, and returned to her home.
